We found this rare and beautiful old French crucifix from 1880-1920 in the town of Esperaza on one of our trips around the local countryside. The Latin cross is mounted on a beautifully turned wooden base that has been “ebonized”, a way to make “faux ebony” with stain/shellac or linseed paint for those who couldn’t afford the luxurious wood. Ebony symbolized strength, resilience and divine luxury, so to make these home pieces seem more luxurious, this technique was used. The silver-plated Christ is made of German silver also known as (silver nickel (nickel, copper, zinc) which was typical for the era. The hand painted cross and base shows a beautiful patina after 100 years of wear. The oxidation of the silver-plated Christ and the bone (cow bone) end pieces with the creamy patina which matches the darkness of the ebonized wood makes this crucifix a rare find that fits in most interiors.

Condition: Good Condition (It is slightly movable at the joint in the middle but not loose or broken)
